Laser decals - success!!

A few lessons learnt along the way, and now I have some successful laser decal ceramics.

The glaze is so important. The poor texture I got last time (see my old post on decals), I now realise was due to the glaze - a high zinc oxide glaze. The decals did not like it.

So when I use my reliable clear glaze (from Hesselberth and Roy's book Mastering Cone 6 Glazes), the decals were fantastic. They did not even show an edge when fired to 1000deg C, with a slow firing cycle.

These tiles are for Hearts and Minds in Hastings Street, Noosa the images are photographs by Julie Holland

Glossy Black Cockatoos on these bowls decorated with slip transfer printing - finally I am happy with them.

New range of circus bowls - not sure where these will end up yet.

Not easy to photograph - but shows the uneven texture when the decal is put over the zinc oxide rich glaze. Not a good look.

Congratulations Ellen!! So glad all your research has earned such good results! Who knows where this will lead you once you get to China! Love that more pointy bowl :^)

Ah, Mastering Cone 6 Glazes! Just got the book myself. Good to see a testimonial! Nice decal work...

Hey Cynthia - I think is it one on the best glaze books around - it give a very clear run down and approach to glaze testing, with a focus on glaze fit. Not good if you are looking for textured glazes, but fantastic for functional and well fitting glazes. Most glazes work for me with Australian materials too.

good result, I must try that glaze recipe if I can find the book. I put decals over Walkers Earthenware Glaze WEG and it seems to work at 1060. I put them on unglazed but polished porcelain too at a higher temperature. Your look brilliant. Woo Hoo!

Hi Elaine - I had to order the book directly from John Hesselberth and Ron Roy -they only charged $12 postage - the booksellers wanted about $80 postage! Here is the recipe: Soda feld 31, Silica 21, 4108 5, G borate 10, Kaolin 17, whiting 13, Talc 3. I have added oxides too - it's a well behaved cone 5-6 glaze. The decals are fired to about 1000deg C. Good luck - look forward to seeing your results. I loved your nests. I have put decals on bisqued ware (hard to make them stick) and they were good too.
